Wammu
Wammu is a nice SMS client on linux. I have vodafone wireless broadband modem. I use it as phone for sms purpose. It is realtively straightforward with fedora 13. here are steps followed
- plugin USB modem
- NetworkManager will automatically connect the wireless broadband
- add your user name to groups dialout, dip, uucp and lock as
sudo usermod -a -G lock,dialout,dip,uucp user
- start wammu
- go phone setting
- get connected
- create and send SMS

Steps to installation (example for fedora or redhat)
- Download at http://www.betavine.net/repo/packages/fedora/Fedora.tgz
- tar xvfz Fedora.tgz
- yum install wvdial redhat-lsb pyserial python-sqlite2 python-twisted pytz gnome-python2-libegg
- rpm -i usb_modeswitch-0.9.7-1.fc11.i386.rpm
- rpm -i ozerocdoff-0.4-1.fc11.i386.rpm
- rpm -i vodafone-mobile-connect-svn20090719.noarch.rpm
- usermod -a -G lock,dialout,dip,lock
- vodafone-mobile-connect-card-driver-for-linux
- vodafone-mobile-connect-card-driver-for-linux-debug

Windows Xp on VirtualBox
Alternative solution is Window XP on virtuabox. add USB modem to USB list of windows Xp (guest for VirtualBox) and install vodafone-mobile-connect. It works too
